I liked the simplicity of the book and the hero and heroine are very likable one thing I love about Julia Quinn books is that her heroines are always women whom I think would be nice to have as friends. I was pleasantly surprised and somewhat relieved that I ended up enjoying it. The Smythe-Smiths were famous (or infamous is probably more accurate) but would it be what you expect from a Quinn book - a fun and light romance - or would it be like the past few duds?

The past few years, her books have been uneven for me, so I was a little nervous about picking this one up. When I first started reading romances, Julia Quinn was one of my favorite authors and I fell absolutely in love with her Bridgerton series, as I know many other romance readers did as well. Really.Ī simple and light romance, which is sometimes just what you need

They'd known each other since they were children, had already formed a friendship, then they figured out they love-loved each other after she cleaned out the festering wound she inadvertently caused on his leg and nursed him back to health. However, Honoria and Marcus were a perfect couple.

But even after she was openly mocked and humiliated at one of the concerts, and even after seeing how much of a negative impact it had on her cousins, she was STILL happily planning to put her as-of-yet unborn daughter up on the stage when she gets to be the right age. Honoria was proud to be in it because she felt like it was a family tradition and she was determined to smile like a lunatic and pretend to be thrilled to be there.įine. Both were willing to do almost anything to get out of it, including faking illness and considering marriage to old men. Now two of Honoria's cousins were completely mortified to have to play this year. A few of the girls are intelligent enough to realize that most of the people come out of pity, but most of the girls are completely unaware that their annual performance is a torture worse than death. This family has a long standing tradition of a musical made up of 4 unmarried Smythe-Smith girls. Ok, so for those of you who have never read a Julia Quinn novel, the Smythe-Smith Quartet is a well-known group. She's that bitch that you're suposed to like because she's so goddamn nice, but really you avoid being alone with her because getting stuck in a conversation with a goody-goody is like its own ring of hell. She's the one that basically spoils all the fun and puts the kibosh on your plans of a day-drinking adventure, then guilts everyone into volunteering their Saturday to help her put together craft kits for her Vacation Bible School class.
